The simple truth about total calorie intake (+ AI tracking tips)
THE SCIENCE OF WEIGHT LOSS
ENERGY BALANCE IS EVERYTHING.
When it comes to fat loss, no supplement, workout split, or diet label supersedes the law of thermodynamics. Total calorie intake dictates whether your body taps into stored energy or holds onto it. Gaining clarity on your daily intake is the foundation of every lasting transformation.
If you eat less of everything your body will use muscle, glycogen and fat as energy.
If you eat a high protein diet in a caloric deficit your body will use more fat and glycogen. It's really that simple as far as changing body composition.
Your glutes or butt is the largest muscle, if you sit down a lot and don't use it. Your body thinks it doesn't need it. Thats why when you adjust your diet by eating less of everything, it will just use that muscle for stored energy, nutrients etc. The classic clense and crash diets will just make your skin look loose or bloated and your butt flat.
It's frustrating I know.
Another issue becomes how many calories out or figuring out your daily calorie needs, how do you know you are in a caloric deficit?
It is complicated because when you eat less your body's metabolic rate will slow down. It does this through the thyroid among other ways. It's also a theory of mine as to why a lot of women have hypothyroidism. Anyways, an easy way to know if you are in a calorie deficit is the scale. Are you losing weight? Track the data daily and you will a line graph that looks like the stock market, but it should be trending in a direction. If you see spikes going up thats usually salt intake or hormone changes if you are a women....Sorry, if you have ovaries. Female assigned at birth.
Keeping metabolism high while in a deficit.......
The 'easiest' way to combat this feedback loop is strength training. This is why bodybuilders and fitness models keep lifting heavy even while in a calorie deficit. In a deficit, the body doesn't have enough "building materials" to add new muscle, but heavy training still burns a lot of calories and sends a strong signal to hold onto the muscle you already have. That signal runs largely through mTOR signaling (along with mechanical tension and adequate protein intake), which keeps muscle protein synthesis elevated and tells the body that lean tissue is needed. As a result, more of the weight lost comes from fat rather than muscle, which helps protect your metabolic rate and keeps the loop from spiraling.
